After working as an editor on the films Higelin, Lettre à mon père and Cap Tourmente, Jean-Claude Coulbois made television documentaries and, from 1995 and on, began a series of films on various aspects of Quebec culture, focusing mostly on the connection between new theatre and the evolution of Quebec society. Over the years, these films have explored various forms of cinéma direct, from the short film Joyeux Noël, Julie (1997), based on a text by Yvan Bienvenue, to the documentary feature Un miroir sur la scène (1997), a look back at the growth of theatre in Quebec from the 1960s to the year 2000.
